The Peugeot 3008 is a stylish family SUV — and it lets itself down with two well-documented engine families [1]. The first-generation T84 (2009-2016) is dominated by the 1.6 THP "Prince" engine shared with BMW Mini, which is notorious for timing chain stretch, oil consumption, HPFP and turbo failures. The second-generation P84 (2016-2024) carried over the 1.6 THP and added the EAT6/EAT8 Aisin automatic with jerky-shift complaints, BlueHDi diesels with AdBlue / SCR failures, and the i-Cockpit digital cluster with its own failure modes. What Car? puts the 3008 28th of 34 family SUVs for reliability. This guide is the seven faults we field most often across our 3008 model range, with rand pricing and SA-specific context.

1. 1.6 THP Timing Chain Stretch

The Prince 1.6 THP (EP6CDT / EP6CDTM) is the headline 3008 problem [1][2]. Peugeot revised the chain design at least four times during production, but every T84 3008 and early P84 3008 with this engine should be treated as having a wear-item chain — not a lifetime part. A 1.5 BlueHDi diesel chain failure on the 2018+ 3008 has its own separate, similarly fragile chain [3].

Symptoms

  • Rattling noise from the engine on cold start, lasting a few seconds
  • Engine warning light, P0016 or P0017 camshaft-crankshaft correlation codes
  • Loss of power, rough idle, sometimes limp mode
  • In worst cases the chain skips or snaps, bending valves and writing off the engine

Causes

  • Original chain design too thin and prone to stretch
  • Long oil-change intervals strip the chain of lubrication [1]
  • Carbon and varnish around the tensioner restrict its travel
  • Worn guide rails allow the chain to whip
  • UK GOV.UK recall lodged for premature wearing leading to abnormal noise or chain breakage [4]

Solution

  • Replace timing chain assembly with the latest revised part (kit includes chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets)
  • Renew oil and filter at the same job
  • Shorten service interval to 10,000 km using fully synthetic 5W-30
  • Listen for any cold-start rattle on a used 3008 — walk away or budget the full chain job
  • See our 1.6 THP Prince timing chain guide for the engine-by-engine breakdown

SA Used-Buy Reality

SA Peugeot dealers historically ran 15,000-20,000 km service intervals — too long for this chain. Insist on 10,000 km stamps in the book on any T84 or early P84 3008. Cars with full Peugeot service history under 80,000 km are the sweet spot. Anything over 120,000 km without a documented chain replacement should be priced on the assumption you will be doing one.

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Workshop only — engine-out or sub-frame drop, 10-14 hours labour. Parts: R6,500 - R12,000 revised kit. Workshop fitted: R18,000 - R35,000. If the chain has skipped and bent valves: R55,000 - R90,000 for a head rebuild on top.

2. EAT6 / EAT8 Jerky Shifts

The 6-speed Aisin EAT6 (TF-71SC) and later 8-speed EAT8 (TF-81SC) auto gearboxes are standard on most P84 3008s [5]. Mechanically they are well-regarded, but the "sealed for life" ATF actually degrades by 60,000-80,000 km — and contaminated fluid then damages the valve-body solenoids.

Symptoms

  • Jerky or jolting upshifts, especially 1-2 and 2-3 from cold
  • Hesitation when pulling away from a standstill
  • Slipping or "flaring" between gears at low speed
  • Occasional dashboard "gearbox fault" message and limp mode

Causes

  • Aisin TF-71 / TF-81 "sealed for life" ATF actually degrades by 60,000-80,000 km [5]
  • Contaminated fluid damages solenoids inside the valve body
  • Worn torque converter lock-up clutch
  • Outdated TCU software — Peugeot has issued updates over the production run

Solution

  • Full ATF service every 60,000 km — drain plus pan drop plus filter plus refill with Aisin-spec Total ATF
  • Run the latest TCU software update at a Peugeot specialist
  • If the jerk remains after fluid plus software, the valve body or torque converter is next
  • Full picture and SA labour rates on our EAT6 EAT8 transmission guide

SA Climate Impact

Gauteng summer heat and Durban coastal humidity both shorten ATF service life. For a daily-driven SA EAT6, 50,000 km is a safer flush interval than 60,000. Valve-body failures cluster on cars running original factory fluid past 80,000 km — do not be that car.

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Pan-drop fluid service is intermediate-DIY. Valve-body and torque-converter work is specialist. Costs: full fluid plus filter service R3,500 - R6,500. Valve body rebuild R18,000 - R30,000. Full gearbox replacement R55,000-plus.

3. 1.6 THP Oil Consumption

The same EP6CDT that suffers chain stretch also burns oil — owners report a litre per 1,000-1,500 km being a normal pattern after 100,000 km [8][9]. The root cause is carbon-coked piston rings; secondary causes include PCV failure and turbo seal wear.

Symptoms

  • Oil light or low-oil warning between services
  • Blue smoke from the exhaust under acceleration
  • Oil-fouled spark plugs and a misfire
  • Top-up oil needed every 1,000-1,500 km

Causes

  • Carbon-clogged piston ring lands — rings stick and stop sealing [8]
  • Worn valve stem seals letting oil down the guides
  • Failing turbo oil seals (oil out of the cold side)
  • PCV / oil-separator failure pulling oil into the intake

Solution

  • Start with a chemical decoke or walnut-blast and a new PCV
  • Refill with the correct 5W-30 ACEA C2 spec and shorten service to 10,000 km
  • If consumption is still over a litre per 1,000 km, the piston rings are gone and the engine needs to come apart
  • Refurbished turbo at R12,000-R22,000 is much cheaper than new

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

PCV replacement is DIY-friendly. Walnut clean and ring replacement is workshop. Costs: walnut clean and PCV R3,500 - R8,000. Refurbished turbo R12,000 - R22,000. Piston rings R28,000 - R55,000.

4. DPF Blockage (1.6 / 2.0 HDi)

Every diesel 3008 has a DPF, and short-trip urban duty cycles are the single biggest cause of DPF blockage in SA [11][12]. The 3008 sells in disproportionate numbers as a school-run SUV, which is exactly the duty cycle that kills the filter.

Symptoms

  • "Risk of DPF clogging" or "Particle filter additive minimum level" dashboard message
  • Loss of power and limp mode
  • Glow-plug light flashing on the cluster
  • Increased fuel consumption and a smell of fuel from the oil dipstick

Causes

  • Short urban journeys preventing the DPF reaching regeneration temperature
  • Eolys (cerine) fluid tank empty or sensor faulty
  • Failed differential pressure sensor reading wrong soot load [13]
  • Stuck or sooted EGR valve dumping too much soot into the filter

Solution

  • Take the car for a 30-minute motorway run above 3,000 rpm in 4th gear to trigger an active regen
  • Plug in a Peugeot-capable diagnostic tool, check differential pressure and Eolys level, force a static regen
  • Replace the differential pressure sensor (cheap) before quoting a new DPF (expensive)
  • For wider diesel context see our 1.6 HDi DPF EGR guide

Short-Trip Warning

If your weekly driving is school runs and grocery stops, the diesel 3008 will eat itself inside three years. Take it onto the N1, N3 or N4 for half an hour every weekend at 100-plus km/h so the DPF can run a full active regen. We never see weekly-motorway DV6 owners in with a DPF bill.

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Forced regen plus a motorway run is free if you have a Peugeot-capable specialist. Costs: forced regen plus Eolys top-up R1,800 - R3,500. Professional chemical clean R8,000 - R14,000. New OEM DPF R28,000 - R55,000.

5. AdBlue / SCR System Failure

The P84 BlueHDi diesels (1.5 DV5 and 2.0 DW10F, 2016-2022) carry an SCR / AdBlue system that immobilises the car when its countdown expires [14][15]. Sensor and injector failures are common; supermarket-brand AdBlue contamination is one of the most common root causes.

Symptoms

  • "Risk of no start in 1,100 km" or "0 km" AdBlue countdown warning
  • AdBlue level reads empty straight after a refill
  • "Engine fault: Repair needed" warning — vehicle refuses to restart once countdown hits zero
  • AdBlue tank leaking or crystallised around the injector

Causes

  • Faulty AdBlue NOx sensor or quality sensor
  • Failed AdBlue pump or injector
  • Cracked AdBlue tank or heater
  • Software bug in the SCR ECU
  • Cheap supermarket AdBlue contaminating the injector — the most common root cause [14]

Solution

  • Plug in a diagnostic tool and read the live SCR data — do not let the dealer sell you a whole tank assembly until the cheap parts (NOx sensor, quality sensor) have been eliminated
  • Always use AUS32 / ISO22241 spec AdBlue from a reputable supplier
  • Replace cracked or contaminated tank only after sensor failure has been ruled out

Drive-Stop Warning

Once the AdBlue countdown reaches zero, the car will not restart — anywhere. Do not ignore the warning. SA AdBlue availability is good in major centres but patchy in rural areas; carry a spare 5L bottle on any long-distance trip if the warning has appeared.

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Top-up and refill is DIY easy. Sensor replacement is intermediate. Tank replacement is specialist. Costs: NOx sensor R6,500 - R12,000. Pump or injector R12,000 - R22,000. Full tank replacement R35,000 - R55,000.

6. i-Cockpit Touchscreen Failure

The P84 3008's centre touchscreen and digital instrument cluster are central to almost every car function — climate, audio, navigation, CarPlay [18][19]. When they fail, the car becomes hard to use. Peugeot has issued multiple software TSBs over the model run.

Symptoms

  • Central touchscreen goes completely black and unresponsive
  • Digital instrument cluster flickers, freezes, or shows half the screen
  • Loss of climate, audio, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay
  • Random reboots while driving

Causes

  • Failed solder joints on the NAC infotainment unit
  • Corrupt firmware after a failed over-the-air update [18]
  • 12V battery voltage drop confusing the infotainment ECU
  • Loose ribbon cable behind the cluster

Solution

  • First-line: disconnect the 12V battery for 15 minutes to force a soft reset
  • Get a Peugeot dealer or specialist to run the latest NAC firmware update
  • If the screen stays dead, a refurbished unit with VIN coding is much cheaper than new dealer parts
  • Check battery health before assuming the head unit is dead

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Reset is DIY easy. Unit replacement is specialist. Costs: reset and firmware reflash R1,500 - R3,000. Refurbished NAC unit R8,000 - R18,000. New dealer cluster R25,000 - R45,000.

7. HPFP Failure (1.6 THP)

The Bosch HPFP on the 1.6 THP has a known cam-follower wear issue — the original cup-follower wears flat against the camshaft lobe, and the lobe itself eventually wears [21][22]. Fault code P0087 (fuel rail pressure too low) is the diagnostic giveaway.

Symptoms

  • Hesitation and stutter at low RPM, especially when warm
  • Long crank times before the engine fires
  • Fault code P0087 (fuel rail pressure too low) or P008A
  • Engine cuts out then restarts, or refuses to start at all

Causes

  • Worn HPFP camshaft follower or lobe (the original cup-follower wears flat) [21]
  • Internal pump piston wear letting pressure leak back
  • Contaminated fuel and water in the rail
  • Failed fuel pressure sensor on the rail

Solution

  • If the car logs P0087 or hesitates at low rpm, drop the HPFP and inspect the cam follower
  • Fit the revised follower kit (steel cup) at the same time as the pump — they wear together
  • Always replace the rail pressure sensor before condemning the whole pump — sensor is one-quarter of the cost
  • Use only genuine PSA / Bosch units — aftermarket pumps frequently throw the same code

DIY Difficulty & Cost in SA

Workshop job — 4-6 hours. Costs: rail pressure sensor R2,500 - R4,500. New HPFP and follower R8,500 - R15,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Peugeot 3008 reliable in South Africa?

Below average — What Car? ranks the 3008 28th of 34 family SUVs and Peugeot 21st of 32 brands [1]. The 1.6 THP and 1.5 BlueHDi both have well-documented chain issues; the EAT6/EAT8 needs proper fluid maintenance; the BlueHDi diesels have AdBlue failures. Buy with full service history.

Does the Peugeot 3008 have a wet belt?

The 3008 1.2 PureTech petrol (some P84 variants) uses a wet belt — same engine as the 208, 2008 and 308. The 1.6 THP uses a chain (with its own stretch problem). The 1.5 BlueHDi from 2018 uses a separate chain that also has documented failures [3]. The 2.0 BlueHDi diesel uses a dry belt on a longer interval.

How long does a Peugeot 3008 timing chain last?

Treat the 1.6 THP chain as a wear item, not lifetime. Listen for cold-start rattle from 80,000 km onwards and budget R18,000 - R35,000 for a pre-emptive replacement. Skipping this is how engines bend valves [1][2].

Is the Peugeot 3008 EAT6 / EAT8 reliable?

Mechanically yes, but it needs an Aisin-spec ATF flush every 60,000 km — not "sealed for life" as Peugeot's manual implies [5]. Valve-body failures cluster on cars running factory fluid past 80,000 km. Always confirm an ATF service stamp before buying.

What is the most reliable Peugeot 3008 engine?

The 1.2 PureTech (Gen3, post-2023) chain-driven variant if you can find one — it dropped the wet belt. Pre-2023, the 1.6 THP is powerful but high-maintenance; the 1.5 BlueHDi is efficient but has DPF and AdBlue costs. Avoid the early-T84 1.6 THP unless service history is impeccable.

Should I buy a used Peugeot 3008 in South Africa?

Yes, with three checks. First, confirm chain (THP) or wet belt (PureTech) service history. Second, run a Diagbox scan for live AdBlue and gearbox data on diesels and EAT6 autos. Third, cold-start the car and listen for the THP chain rattle. Cars under 80,000 km with full Peugeot history are the sweet spot.

How much does it cost to fix a Peugeot 3008 timing chain in SA?

R18,000 - R35,000 fitted at an independent Peugeot specialist for a clean chain replacement including tensioner, guides, sprockets and oil-pump pickup. If the chain has already skipped and bent valves, R55,000 - R90,000 for a head rebuild on top.

Important Disclaimer

Repair costs in this article are 2026 South African workshop estimates for Pretoria and Johannesburg independent Peugeot specialists. Dealer pricing typically runs 25-40% higher. Final pricing depends on your specific VIN, engine variant, service history, and whether ancillary parts (oil pump, water pump, ATF, walnut clean) are renewed at the same time. Always get a written quote and confirm parts are coded where required (head units, BSI modules, AdBlue tanks, mechatronic units). Recall eligibility must be checked against your VIN at peugeot.co.za/owners/maintain-your-car/recall.html — recall fixes are free at authorised dealers when the car is in scope.
