If you own a Peugeot 3008 or 508 (Mk2) built between October 2019 and January 2020, a batch of rear-suspension fixing bolts on your car may have left the factory out of specification. Under load they can crack and ultimately fail. The DVSA launched recall R/2020/052 on 25 February 2020 to replace those bolts before failure occurs. The recall remains open at Peugeot dealers worldwide, including Stellantis SA.

What the recall covers

PSA's bolt supplier delivered a batch of rear-suspension fixing bolts that did not meet the required mechanical properties — specifically, fatigue strength was below specification. Over repeated load cycles (every bump, every cornering load) the bolts can crack and eventually fracture. If a rear-axle bolt breaks while the car is moving, the rear suspension geometry shifts unpredictably and the driver can lose directional control.

Under R/2020/052 a Peugeot dealer removes the suspect bolts, fits new bolts made to the correct specification, and torques them to factory yield values. Torque-to-yield bolts are single-use by design — the dealer fits new bolts even if the originals look fine. Job time is two to three hours.

Which cars are affected

R/2020/052 covers Peugeot 3008 (Mk2 SUV) and Peugeot 508 (Mk2 fastback and SW estate) built between 12 October 2019 and 15 January 2020 — a tight three-month production window. Most 2019-registered 3008 and 508 cars in SA are outside the recall, but a slice of cars registered in early to mid 2020 fall inside it.

The recall does NOT apply to Mk1 508 cars (2011-2018), Mk1 3008 (2009-2016), cars built before 12 October 2019 or after 15 January 2020, or other Peugeot models (208, 2008, 308, 5008).

How to check if your car is on the list

The recall remains open in 2026 — Stellantis does not close active safety campaigns until uptake plateaus.

  1. Peugeot SA online recall tool — peugeot.co.za/owners/maintain-your-car/recall.html. Enter your 17-character VIN.
  2. Call Peugeot SA on 0860 738 472 — quote your VIN and ask about recall R/2020/052.
  3. Any authorised Peugeot dealer — service advisors can pull the VIN against the recall database.

South African Context

SA cars in the build window are covered by Stellantis SA's recall mirror — the fix is free at any authorised Peugeot dealer regardless of mileage, warranty status, or how many owners the car has had. If you bought your 3008 or 508 used from a non-Peugeot dealer or private seller, you may not have received the original recall letter. Run the VIN check yourself. The campaign does not expire while open.

What Peugeot does for free under the recall

The dealer lifts the car on the hoist, removes the suspect rear-axle fixing bolts, fits new bolts made to the correct specification torqued to factory yield values, and documents the campaign as complete on the VIN history. No other suspension components are touched under the recall — bushes, drop links and dampers are quoted as separate work if needed.

What if you are outside the recall window

If your 3008 or 508 is outside the October 2019 – January 2020 window but the rear end knocks over bumps anyway, the bolts are unlikely to be the cause. Usual suspects past 80,000 km in SA pricing:

  • Rear anti-roll bar drop links — R 600 – R 1,500 per side fitted
  • Rear subframe bushes — R 2,500 – R 4,500 fitted (specialist work)
  • Rear shock-absorber top mounts — R 1,200 – R 2,200 per side fitted
  • Worn rear lower control-arm bushes — R 1,800 – R 3,800 per side fitted

Intermittent knock on cornering only? Start with drop links. Constant on every bump? Expect bushes or shocks. A four-wheel alignment is essential after any rear-end work — budget another R 650.

Symptoms to watch for

The recall is precautionary — most affected cars show no symptoms before the bolts are replaced. But if a bolt has already started to crack you may notice:

  • A dull knock or clunk from the rear under acceleration or over bumps
  • Visible play in the rear-axle mountings when the car is jacked off the ground
  • Vague rear-end steering at speed — the car "wanders" on the motorway
  • Uneven rear tyre wear that does not match alignment specs

SA roads are harder on suspension than UK roads — pothole density, speed bumps, gravel — so bolts marginal on fatigue strength stress earlier here than in UK conditions. If your 3008 or 508 falls in the build window, prioritise the VIN check before your next long road trip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my Peugeot 3008 or 508 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN at peugeot.co.za/owners/maintain-your-car/recall.html. You can also call Peugeot SA on 0860 738 472 with your VIN and ask about recall R/2020/052, or walk in to any authorised Peugeot dealer.

Does the R/2020/052 recall apply in South Africa?

Yes. Stellantis SA mirrors the global safety-critical recalls. If your car was built between 12 October 2019 and 15 January 2020 the free bolt replacement is available at any authorised Peugeot SA dealer regardless of mileage or warranty status.

How much does the rear suspension bolt recall cost?

R0. The bolts and labour are both free. Other rear-end wear (drop links, bushes, shocks) is quoted separately — not covered by the recall.

What happens if I ignore the rear suspension recall?

Under repeated load the under-spec bolts can fracture. A broken rear-axle bolt while driving shifts the rear suspension geometry unpredictably and can cause loss of control. SA's pothole-heavy roads accelerate fatigue failure compared to UK conditions.

Can I sell my Peugeot if it has an outstanding recall?

You can, but you should disclose it. Section 55 of the SA Consumer Protection Act implies a warranty of quality and selling with an undisclosed open safety recall exposes you to liability. Book the free fix before listing.

Will the recall affect my insurance or roadworthy?

Not directly. An open recall does not invalidate roadworthy or insurance. But insurers may decline a claim if a known safety-critical defect contributed to a loss and the owner failed to action a free recall.
