Peugeot Starter

A replacement starter motor for Peugeot models ranges from R2,500 to R6,500 depending on the model and engine type. Smaller EP6 petrol engine starters (208, 2008) typically cost R2,500-R4,000, while BlueHDi diesel starters (3008, 5008) run R4,500-R6,500. Labour adds another R800-R1,500 at most South African workshops.

Peugeot starter motors generally last between 100,000 to 150,000 km under normal conditions. However, in South African stop-start traffic and with vehicles equipped with stop-start technology, this can be reduced to 80,000-100,000 km. Regular battery maintenance and avoiding repeated start attempts can extend starter motor lifespan significantly.

Starter motors can sometimes be repaired if only the solenoid or brushes have failed, costing R1,200-R2,000 for reconditioning. However, most workshops in SA recommend replacement with a new or quality remanufactured unit due to labour costs and reliability concerns. Remanufactured starters with warranty typically cost only R500-R1,000 more than repairs.

Cold Gauteng and Free State mornings thicken engine oil and reduce battery capacity, requiring more power from the starter motor. If your BlueHDi or DV6 diesel Peugeot struggles when cold but starts fine when warm, the starter may be wearing out or the battery charge may be insufficient. Have both components tested before winter to avoid being stranded.

Common causes in SA include a weak battery forcing the starter to work harder, oil leaks from engine seals contaminating the starter (common on higher-mileage THP engines), corroded electrical connections from coastal humidity, and heat soak from turbo engines. Stop-start systems on newer 208, 2008, and 3008 models also increase wear through frequent cycling.
