Peugeot 408 Trunk/Tailgate

Usually a failed lock actuator or broken wires in the rubber boot between the body and the tailgate. We see this on 206, 207, 307, 308 and 3008 models constantly. The wires flex thousands of times and eventually fracture inside the insulation — invisible from outside.

On most Peugeots, fold the rear seats down, climb into the boot, and pull the emergency release lever or slide the latch catch visible from inside. Workshop manuals show the exact location per model. If the linkage is broken, you'll need the trim removed to release mechanically.

Years of opening and closing flex the wires inside the rubber boot joining the tailgate to the body. The copper work-hardens and snaps inside the insulation. You end up with dead wiper, demister, lock or reverse camera even though the connector looks fine.
